Mixing Styles in One Text

One text box can hold several looks: a name in a script font, a price in red, a date a size smaller. Select the characters, then change them. It works in a text and in a paragraph, on every platform.

Selecting characters

Start editing the text, then select inside it:

  • Browser and desktop β€” double-click the text to edit it, then drag across the characters, or hold Shift and use the arrow keys.
  • Android and iOS β€” tap the selected text, or use Edit Text, then select as in any other app: double-tap a word, and drag the selection handles to widen it. On Android a long press also selects a word; on iOS it places the caret.

What a selection changes

With characters selected, these change only those characters:

  • Font
  • Format β€” Bold, Italic and the family's other styles
  • Font Size
  • Color
  • Letter spacing, in the Spacing sheet

With the text selected but not being edited, the same controls change the whole text.

Some settings belong to more than a few characters:

  • Align applies to the whole text.
  • Line spacing and List apply to whole lines.

See paragraphs, lists and spacing.

Bold and italic inside a sentence

Format, and Cmd/Ctrl + B and Cmd/Ctrl + I in the browser and desktop apps, work on a selection too, so one word can be bold in an ordinary sentence.

A selection that spans two font families is handled differently by platform:

  • Browser and desktop β€” the selection keeps both families: Bold makes each part bold in its own family.
  • Android and iOS β€” Format lists the styles of the family where the selection starts, and the style you pick turns the whole selection into that family. To keep two families, style each part on its own.

In the export

Each style prints as it shows on the canvas, in every export format. A vector PDF embeds every font the text uses.
